That's a really fine banjo. You did well.
I have a much lower grade Stetson that is later (has a 22xxx Fairbanks serial number on the stick, so it's 1903). The rim is also double spun - a Stetson trade mark.

That's neat....This one is marked "2" in the clad inside rim directly under the stick. I wonder what year that is? Or is that not a serial number?

The heel carving, inlay pattern and engraving are characteristic of Fairbanks c. 1895-1898. The 2 may be a serial number, especially so if it was imprinted with a metal stamp. If it is a hand written/engraved digit, it is more likely is an identifier put on as the maker matches rim to neck. There may be a corresponding 2 placed on the neck where it won't show, such as the top side of the dowel or on the surface of the neck that is in contact with the rim.

Yes the 2 is metal stamped, and I have felt an indention on the underside or top of the stick....will check with a mirror. Thanks

Was able to shoot with iphone, it has a 2 stamped on stick. Maybe the presentation-grades, of which I am told only 4 exists, are numbered 1-4.

Really cool that the stick is stamped with matching number. The serial is a non-Fairbanks number for sure and indeed, the single digits may have been reserved for presentations within the Stetson line.
It's also possible the presentations were made early as eye catchers to help launch the Stetson line at trade shows or public expos, hence the early number.
My later Stetson with the Fairbanks serial on the stick is likely just another factory anomaly.
