This little trophy was presented in 1978 at the first Uncle Dave Macon Banjo Picken Contest. Today this is an annual event in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Uncle Dave Macon Days has moved from the old court house square from those early years to a larger venue at Cannonsburg just a few minute walk from the original location. At that first event I was accompanied by long time friend John Balch. We snagged this 2nd place trophy in spite of my short tenure on banjo.

That is a really important piece of festival history.
Not only has Uncle Dave Macon Days continued for 33 years. But it is the National Championship for Old-time banjo and Old Time Dance (buckdancing & clogging). The festival has grown to serve more than 40,000 participants annually. It enjoys a very special relationship with WSM radio home of the Grand Ole Opry. Our heritage award winners include a who's who of greats including some who have now passed on like: Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Roy Acuff, Bashful Bro. Oswald, Mike Seeger, and Grandpa Jones.
David...who could have imagined what would come of that little banjo pickin contest?

Well I suppose what it has become could not have been predicted...but it does go far to show a deep interest in old time music and how a good idea from a local merchant can have lasting impact on a community. It wouldn't have survived without countless hours of leadership from folks like you and others that have come afterward that see Uncle Dave Macon Days as a great cause. David E.

I second David's comment in a big way!
