A multitrack fiddle-banjo duet with some guitar and bass backup. This is one of those fiddle tunes that's difficult to track down in terms of a source. Although there are several versions (some unrelated) of the tune, this version is probably a Hiram Stamper version and later adapted slightly by his son Art.

Most versions of Cherokee Shuffle contain 8 measures in Part A and 10 in Part B. This one contains 10 measures in both A and B, with a return to the F#minor chord during the extra 2 measures in Part A. Some Old Timers play it this way, although it's not very common. I prefer the tune played this way; gives it a more "Old Timey" sound from my perspective. For a great fiddle/string band version of the tune played this way, see the YouTube link of the UCLA Bluegrass and Old Time String Band with special guest Tommy Stanton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-5DLDmiZro 4 tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Gold Tone CC-OT) melody and guitar bounced to track 1; Bass track 2; Three-Finger Rhythm Banjo track 3; Hammered Dulcimer track 4. As always, with headphones/earbuds, you'll be able to pick up the bass, whereas probably not with laptop speakers.

With genuine, sincere apologies to J.D. Crowe, perhaps my favorite Bluegrass banjo player, this is a clawhammer/frailing (!) version my favorite Bluegrass tune, "Blackjack," and in the key of G no less (!). Multitrack recording where I'm playing clawhammer banjo (Pisgah Woodchuck standard G tuning), guitar, bass (marimbula), and a few fiddle chops. All the instruments "kick in" after the first go round.

Sorry, not as much featured banjo on this one, though it's there for rhythm. Multitrack recording I made using two fiddles, Enoch Tradesman clawhammer banjo, Michael Allen Cloud Nine marimbula (bass), Gold Tone banjo uke, and Cloud Nine hammered dulcimer. If listening through a laptop, headphones/earbuds will permit you to hear the bass. Here's the Fiddler's Companion information about the tune: "Old-Time, Breakdown. G Major. Standard tuning. AB. Source Manon Campbell (1890-1987) learned the tune from his paternal aunt, Viney Campbell Lusk. Apparently, the source for the tune in the family was Campbell’s uncle, who supposedly learned the tune while rafting down the Kentucky River at night. He heard it coming from house parties and dances along the river, but named it “Coal Harbor Bend” because he had become caught in a slow whirlpool at a bend in the river at Coal Harbor (Titon, 2001). Source for notated version: Manon Campbell (Hallie, Letcher County, Ky., 1978) [Titon]. Titon (Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes), 2001; No. 26, pg. 61."

A multitrack recording using a Tascam multitrack recorder, a very slow, lazy and very simplified version of Larry Unger's tune "Elkins." Enoch 12" Tradesman (stuffed with a small towel at neck joint) playing lead in Double D, Martin HD-28 guitar on rhythm, Cloud Nine Marimbula on bass (use headphones/earbuds/other good speakers to pick up the sound), H. Luger CV-300 fiddle also playing some lead. This is certainly not a note-for-note accurate banjo version of Larry Unger's excellent tune, nor as good a version as Jason White's on YouTube (which is outstanding as he compares it being played on five different banjos), but I have attempted to capture much of the essence of the tune as I hear it.

I'd not thought of this as a potential instrumental tune until I heard, about 12-13 years ago, Martin Simpson's fingerstyle guitar version on one of his albums. In this case, I'm playing an Ome Wizard open back (aDADEplaying in Dminor) to carry the melody for track 1, a Marimbula (Michael Allen, Cloud Nine Instruments) to handle the bass on track 2, and I'm playing a Goodall MdRGCC (tuned to DADGAD) for rhythm guitar on track 3.

A multitrack rendition of "Snake" Chapman's (probably learned from his father "Doc") fiddle tune, including clawhammer banjo, fiddle, bass, guitar, and hammered dulcimer. Clawhammer Banjo taking the lead on this one.

A lazy, slow Clawhammer Banjo / Old Time version of a Celtic tune, a version based on the excellent arrangement and performance of fingerstyle guitarist Steve Baughman from his album "The Angel's Portion." Clawhammer banjo on track 1, bass on track 2, hammered dulcimer on track 3.

A multitrack version I recorded with fiddle (Liu Xi workshop, ADAE), clawhammer banjo (Enoch 12" Tradesman with Rickard Dobson ring), guitar, bass. I am unable to find much information about this particular tune, other than this link to its being played: youtube.com/watch?v=qQrGJMvqCGQ I can find very little about this tune; if anyone has more information about it, please let me know. It's a tune that a number of us in the Crooked Lake Fiddle Club (Keuka Lake, New York) played often and regularly a few years ago. Unfortunately, so many members of the group have passed away in the past 4-5 years that the group has disbanded; very sad to lose the friendship and musicianship of so many of what was once a fun jam and performance group. The tune is very simple but catchy and fun to play.

5-part multitrack recording: Clawhammer Banjo and Lead Vocal; Fiddle, that teamed with Banjo and Ham. Dulc. carries all melody of the tune/song; Hammered Dulcimer; Guitar and Harmony Vocal; Bass and 2nd Harmony Vocal. Probably will need headphones/earbuds for Bass to be audible. The artist name "Big Sugar Creek" is just a "virtual band name" I use for these multitrack recordings. This is a cover of the terrific version done by the The New Mules.

Two Old Time tunes, Liza Jane and Hangman's Reel, played in A, based on Brad Kolodner's versions. Recorded in 4 tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Gold Tone CC-OT) and Guitar bounced to track 1; Bass, track 2; Three-Finger Rhythm Banjo, track 3; Hammered Dulcimer, track 4. Use the headphones/earbuds to pick up the bass.

Just some basic "down home" clawhammer in which I recorded myself in 4-tracks: 1: Ramsey "Woody" clawhammer banjo; 2: Martin 00-28VS rhythm; 3: Marimbula (bass); 4: Hammered Dulcimer. As always, use headphones/earbuds in order to hear the bass, rather than just laptop speakers.

All of us have heard the commonly played version of "Mississippi Sawyer" in the key of D. A less common version is one played by groups such as the Foghorn Stringband or The Tallboys and in the key of A; it's a whole different tune with an extra 2/4 measure thrown into the A part. In this multitrack recording I made of myself playing, I used two fiddles, clawhammer banjo, a bass, and a "simulated banjo uke," which involved muting and strumming a 5 string banjo. If anyone should like any details about how I muted the 5-string banjo to obtain that "banjo uke sound" when strumming, send me a private message and I'll email details and a couple of photographs.

Multitrack recording of a tune by Old Time fiddler Paul Kirk. The title honors not the American President, but instead, in Paul's words, "the bald eagle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Regiment during the American Civil War." Fiddle (ADAE), Guitar, Banjo (aDADE), (soft melody) hammered dulcimer, Michael Allen Marimbula/Bass.

Multitrack recording: Fiddle (GDGD), Clawhammer Banjo (Pisgah Woodchuck, gDGBD), Martin HD-28 Guitar, Cloud NIne Marimbula (bass). Not certain which version of Grey Eagle this is, a version played by fiddler Rayna Gellert (though hers is much faster and in the key of A).

A multitrack recording of my slow and simple version of this Lynn Morris tune, where I'm playing clawhammer banjo (Enoch 12" Tradesman with Rickard Dobson tone ring, Double D), fiddle (low G tuned up to A), guitar (Martin HD-28), and bass. This version is more Old Time. As is always the case, better headphones/earbuds/speakers will do a better job of picking up the bass.
