Medley of June Apple, Red Haired Boy, Old Joe Clark, McDonald County. Multitrack recording where I'm playing a no frills 11" open back Deering Goodtime banjo (G tuning capoed up to A), guitar, bass (Michael Allen-made marimbula), light hammered dulcimer (MIchael Allen). Nothing fancy; just basic frailing, lots of hammer offs and ons, not a single drop thumb or double thumb anywhere. Key of A.

A medley of three "New Old Time" tunes by Brad Kolodner from Brad and Ken Kolodner's first album, "Otter Creek." A multitrack recording I made back in 2013 featuring clawhammer banjo (Double D tuning), occasional hammered dulcimer, and bass. Headphones / earbuds help with the sounds.

A different tune than "Polly Put the Kettle On." Great crooked tune, since although it is typically written out in 4/4, it contains an extra 2/4 measure in the middle of Part B. Recorded myself in four tracks: Clawhammer Banjo, Bass (probably will need headphones to hear), Rhythm Guitar, Fiddle. This is a tune I first heard played at a Fiddle Festival jam near Watkins Glen NY about ten years ago by Old Time and Field Recorder icon and banjo player Peter Hoover.

Actually, the fiddle is perhaps a little more prominent than the clawhammer banjo in this one, but it's still very much there. Based on versions of Ken Kolodner and Bruce Molsky. Recorded myself in multitrack: Fiddle, Clawhammer Banjo, Guitar, Bass. Headphones/earbuds/decent speakers help pick up the bass.

Recorded in four tracks: Fiddle lead (center), Clawhammer Banjo (left), Bass (center), Guitar (right). This is another one I've heard played several ways, and this is just a simple, unadorned, basic version. Pretty much the way it sounds when I play it on fiddle in one of my jam groups.

Multitrack recording in 6 tracks: Muted banjo, guitar, bass (Michael Allen marimbula), fiddle, unmuted banjo, "clappers." The open back banjo is a Pisgah Rambler Special "foam-muted" on one track and and unmuted on another, both tuned to G tuning. Fiddle is a cheaper Hermann Luger model cross-tuned to GDGD.

Multitrack (layering) recording (I use the name of Big Sugar Creek for these multitrack recordings) of a tune by Kentucky fiddler Wilson Mabe and played by the group Black Twig Pickers. Fiddle (GDGD), clawhammer banjo, bass, guitar, hammered dulcimer for melody sparkle).

A "cover" of "Mary Z. (and Bob) Cox's 'cover'" of the McGee Brothers banjo tune, recorded by me in three tracks: Clawhammer Banjo (Ome Wizard), Bass (Marimbula by Michael Allen), and Guitar (Martin 00-28VS). Use headphones.

A multitrack version of the tune with me playing fiddle, clawhammer banjo, bass, and guitar under the "virtual band" name of Big Sugar Creek. John Ashby's rendition is my favorite version of the tune, and this is but a very beginner / elementary version that I play. Sorry that my fiddle skills just don't permit me to play it any faster, and I wish I could have made the banjo a little more prominent.

One of my favorite instrumental Old Time tunes. Similar to Jesper Deleuran's Big Hungry Joe (among my favorite Old Time bands, and from Denmark) version, except tuned to key of A (G tuning capoed up two frets. Recorded myself in 4 tracks: Banjo, Bass, Guitar, Fiddle. As someone else has mentioned before, the three parts of the song (A, B, C) always remind me of: A. The release of the fox; B. The dogs chasing the fox; and C. the cornering of the fox.

Multitrack recording. Little ornamentation, simplified, skeleton version of this newer fiddle tune by Jordan Wankoff. Fiddle and Clawhammer Banjo with Bass and Guitar backing. The artist name on the recording, "Big Sugar Creek," is just the name of my "virtual" one-man band!

Most likely from fiddler Jilly Grace, who Bob Wine (Melvin's father) heard play it, and Melvin subsequently learned it. Multitrack recording: Fiddle, Clawhammer Banjo, Marimbula (bass), Guitar, Dulcimer.

A fiddle tune often played by fiddler James Bryan. This multitrack recording is a "skeleton" version of the tune [just can't hit all the fiddle 8th notes anymore] and features medlody banjo and fiddle in the first round and throughout, guitar starting with latter part of round one, and bass and lightly played clawhammer rhythm starting in the second round. Earbuds improve audibility of all the parts.
