My first upload of anything clawhammer-style. This is based on the tab that Terri McMurray gave us at banjo camp. I've been working on the right-hand technique a little every day since early June, and it's slowly -- very slowly, as you'll hear--coming along. Anyway, this is for those of you who have supported my little bits of progress over time. Nothing to write home about, but I am kind of proud even to have gotten this far with claw.

I wanted to try to slow things down a little and started messing around with simple patterns, playing clawhammer style. Here's the result: Michigan Sunset, my first attempt to write a CH tune. It's meant to evoke a peaceful, thoughtful evening, maybe overlooking a lake, or sitting on the Lake Michigan Dunes as the sun goes down. Maybe there's a glass of wine involved. If you're at the Lake at sunset, there should be.

I was doing exercises to practice pull-offs and came up with this tune. We often walk along the St. Joseph River, with the trees blowing, geese honking, little animals scurrying off. Not the most perfect recording, but you'll get the idea.

What happens when I start screwing around. Here's a perfectly good song I wrote, bluegrass style, and now that I can't seem to quit with the Clawhammer, I thought I might try a CH version. You'll also hear me start improvising about 2/3rds of the way through, oops. Anyway, I love playing the banjo and if I couldn't just sit and play without encumbrance by rules now and then, I'd probably give up. Feel free to listen to each version, and let me know which you prefer. Or if you hate them both. (Ok, don't share that with me.)

I named this song for my wife, who called my bluff by getting me a banjo in the first place. Nothing fancy, and not even my best version of it, but I figured after three years, I should probably post a song here.
