For TOTW february 2021. I tried to write out Edden Hammons' melody line, I figured out chords that fit Hammons' notes better than the guitar accompaniment. Then I tried to translate it all to banjo, losing some melody notes and adding some banjoisms. Then I compared it to Stephanie Coleman's version and recorded it "as is".

I stole what I liked in some double C versions of Cumberland gap and put it together with some other licks into this tune, named after my stuffer.

For TOTW march 2021. I picked David Bragger and Rafe Stefanini's version as a basis. I love Bragger's bold approach to old-time music. I think this makes a perfect advancing beginner tune with room in the B part for subtle clucks or chucks. The A part is somewhat melodic without sacrificing groove. I tune up my fifth string to an a and I fret it to note the b in the tail of the A part.

For this tune I experimented with the 7 stacked triads from the D-scale and a continuous root and fifth ringing through. Basically, I think, I am putting to work what Lukas Pool teaches in his free lesson "Double C Tuning Chords and Shapes - Clawhammer Banjo Lesson #1", and mix it with neotraditional bluegrass banjo practice of digging their teeth into the root power chord, whatever happens harmonically. You hear me get lost in space in the bridge with some funny chords where the root and fifth seem to be ok. The ending has a last little harmonic surprise.

For TOTW march 2021 I have two more days until next TOTW, but an OK take one is always more interesting than a faultless take 20. I used Carolyn's tab of forgotten origin and tried to stay close to that and Sheila Kay Adams version. I plan to keep playing it until it feels so natural that I can start to work on something resembling Sheila Kay Adams' great peppy clucks.
