I play this one using a Mike's Mute. It has a sound that I thought sort of fit the mood of this particular song.

I first met John at the Little River Blue Grass Festival back in 1970. John was my inspiration to learn how to play the banjo after I heard Gentle on My Mind and it's probably my favorite song of all time.

First met John in the Summer of 1969 while I was house setting Pat and Victoria Garvey in Central City Colorado. He wasn't famous yet, but he was close, having replace Chad Mitchell in the Chad Mitchel Trio. He was on his way to L.A. to finish production on his first album. This was on his second or third album I think.

I was fooling around with this song one night using my banjo mute (a device designed to keep the marriages of banjo players and their spouses together) and decided that I like the way it sounded. Best know version was by Bobby Darren, but if you haven't heard Tim's you can find it on youtube

"Where you been is good and gone, all ya keeps the gettin' there," quoth Townes Van Zandt. This song says the same thing in a little different way.

The most recognizable icon of what historians refer to as "The Great Westward Expansion was the cowboy. This is Steve's tribute to the men whose "...life was always lonely, and his lot was not the best; but if it wasn't for the life he lived, there wouldn't be no west."

This is one of the first songs I ever learned. I was just a kid when Eddie Arnold recorded it, and I thought it was the neatest song I had ever heard. After I was a grownup musician, I was hanging out one Sunday morning in the backstage area of the Kerrville Folk festival and who should come sauntering in but Jimmy Driftwood. I told him about my early love for his song and he said,"That's nice. I'm glad you liked it. None of us are but about one generation away from losing our music. Have a good morning." and he walked off.

This is from my first live CD. It was recorded in a little coffeehouse in Shawnee, Oklahoma called Sips. Being a humble man, I cut out the thunderous applause at the end.

This song took longer to write than any song I ever written. It was begun on the afternoon of the day I first told my wife that I loved her and was finished just before Valentines day of our 30th anniversary. My son had just broken up with the girl he eventually would marry and we were talking about how you knew you'd found the right girl. It occurred to me that time is how you know it's really real, and I had my title.
