One of my original banjo tunes, melodic style. I was very much into melodics in the early 1970s. From a practice tape by Silver Spring, Vancouver BC, mid-1970s. With Rick Ross, guitar; Bob Goldberg, mandolin; Bill Terry, fiddle; Don Fraser, dobro; Ken Hatch, bass. Banjo: 1929 Gibson model 6 flathead. In British Columbia, road or highway bridges extending over railroad tracks are named "overheads." I was intrigued by the name of this one, near the town of Revelstoke, and wrote a tune around it.

This is a pretty fuzzy radio broadcast, evidently from 1948, of Bill Monroe with Don Reno. At least it is claimed to be Don Reno, and the announcer does thank "Bill and Don." I do not remember where on the internet I found this file.

This radio broadcast from 1956 includes some interesting variations on Scruggs's approach to the tune.

During the discussion in summer 2009 about whether it really was Earl playing on the radio recording of "I'll Fly Away," one BHO member suggested that the rest of us post our versions of the song. So here is a recent version of mine that incorporates a little bit of a salute to the mystery player we have all agonized about (it is indeed Earl Scruggs). Also, near the end, it includes a tip of the hat to Bill Keith, who in the early 1960s came closer than most to capturing elements of not only Earl's style but also his tone, as pointed out first by Steve Arkin. Played on a 2007 Huber VRBG. I have posted the tab for my arrangement of I'll Fly Away on the Tablature Archive in BHO.

This is a fine Reno and Smiley song, from a practice tape of my band Silver Spring, recorded in Vancouver, B.C., in the mid-1970s. Played on a 1929 Gibson model 6 flathead. A tab of the break is posted in the Tablature Archive on BHO.

From a Flatt and Scruggs broadcast on WSM radio, Spring 1956 -- one of my favorite songs by the Foggies. Earl puts on a clinic of banjo backup..

Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys were in concert in Madison, WI, 13 February 1967. His duet with Peter Rowan is haunting, and Monroe was at the top of his game vocally. Banjo: Lamar Grier; fiddle: Richard Greene; bass: James Monroe; guitar: Peter Rowan.
