Recorded on a Gold Tone TB-100 (5-string) travel banjo in 2001. I arranged this tune on the TB in a hotel room in Chicago while I was there on business. It's a D tune but is played here in E because the TB is tuned two frets sharp. This tune has a nice arc for me. I once had a banjo student named Amelia Stiles. She casually mentioned during her last lesson that a friend of her parents had written a tune for her called Amelia's Waltz. That sent me to the old Napster service, where I found a fiddle recording of the tune by Natalie McMaster. I took the tune to Chicago where I was on a 4-month assignment, bought the travel banjo from Janet Davis, and arranged the tune over about a week or two in the hotel room after work. This recording was made in the hotel room too. A couple of years later I was playing a festival. Natalie McMaster was on the bill too, and I got to play the tune with her backstage. I saw Amelia one more time and got to play it for her too.

I was hired to play this as the processional at a wedding, which meant I had to learn it. I wasn't happy with the banjo tabs I found for the tune so this is my own arrangement. I took liberties with the score in two measures - I hope you can't find them, but if you know the piece well enough you will. Played on my Kel Kroydon/Dannick into a Zoom Handy H4. Everything you hear was produced on the H4 - this was recorded with the built-in microphones and one of the built-in reverb settings. No EQ or additional effects were done after the fact.

The Stephen Foster classic as a bluegrass instrumental. First half is a guitar solo, then the banjo comes in. This is the Kel Kroydon/Dannick maple and gold, tuned in double C.

Here's a recording I did a couple of days after buying this banjo from the hangout. If you want to see the instrument, it's classified listing 13675. This is a tune I play on 5-string, but it doesn't really need the 5th string. I apologize in advance for the clam at the end. The tone of this banjo makes me think of every pre-1930 classic banjo recording I ever heard. The sustain on the 4th string lasts forever. Soon, I'll be putting a 5-string neck and gut strings on this banjo, but I'll keep the plectrum neck around so I can re-create this sound. The tune was played in double C, with steel strings and bare fingers, and recorded on the internal mics of a Zoom H4. Enjoy.

My piano teacher recorded this when I was six. It's been in my head ever since as a possible banjo tune. I did this arrangement from the piano score in 2001 when I had some time on my hands. This was recorded back then on my 1988 Granada using CoolEdit and an SM57.

I love fiddle and banjo! From Adam Dewey and Crazy Creek's set at the 2007 Lake Champlain festival in Alburg, VT. The fiddle player is Luke Price, 21 years old at the time of this recording and already a multiple top-5 finisher at the Grand Master Fiddler championship. Banjo is my 2007 Kel Kroydon New Generation/Dannick. Sorry about the hiss - this was recorded off the soundboard but there must have been some noise in the system.

A beautiful Tony Ellis tune. Played on a Kel Kroydon/Dannick/Cushman and recorded on a Zoom Handy H4 placed about five feet from the banjo and bass.
