Here is a slow example of the A & B parts from an old Ralph Stanley tab booklet. Note the 1/16th note slide on the 3rd string in the B part. In my opinion that is what makes the song work. (Sorry, it's a bit rusty)

Orange Line Special taped 2007 Cabin John, Maryland. Taped on a $20 digital voice recorder. Sorry for quality. Richard Dress on banjo. Compare Ralph Stanley's 1958 version to his 1964 recording and see how much he changed the B part. The older versions are much better, I believe.
