The Cardiff Folk Scene

Sunday, May 17, 2015

The Cardiff folk scene is concentrated into two main camps, both of whom host an open stage. On one side of town there is the St.Peter’s Rugby Club crew, Tony Brean and the boys, musicians who make a living playing country music at the weekend and for whom I have enormous respect. On the other side of town there is the BBC club run by folk-singer Frank Hennessy. Both camps have Irish roots.
When it comes to the tension and hostility between the two cliques. (Some people think Frank Hennessy stole all his songs from someone else) I sit squarely on the fence. Although the BBC club can exhibit a touch of old-school style folk Stalinism, they have top gear and will always try to deliver as high-quality a sound as possible for a performer.
