I was inspired to pick up a banjo by listening to Billy Connolly and indeed my reason for liking it was the same as Billy's - "That'sit! That's the noise I want to make!". I had previously tried guitar briefly and couldn't get on with it, but in any case it wasn't the right sound. However if someone had told before I bought it that the banjo was a 'notoriously difficult' instrument to learn and play, I probably would have contented myself with listening to others. I'm so glad I was unaware of it's reputation and got it anyway! It is sometimes difficult but it's also fun - you can't play it without smiling!!
