I've been playing guitar for a few years now and after getting into a lot of "folk punk" music, I decided to get a little folksier and try out the banjo. I picked up a 5-string Bestler banjo from craigslist for only $50 and started learning clawhammer style a few days ago, and I'm really enjoying it!
At first it was a bit tough to keep my hand in the claw shape, but I heard of a cool trick to train your hand: Hold onto a credit card with your fingers. It worked out great for me. I'm having a bit of trouble picking the 3rd and 4th strings cleanly, but that'll come in time with some careful practice.
Today I even wrote my first simple song that I just need to put some lyrics to and have a buddy hop on the guitar. You can check it out on my music list here: http://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/music.asp?id=8878
I know it's not as clean sounding as it could be, but I'll slow it down and get it sounding nice. I was just excited to get it out there. Any feedback from y'all would be appreciated!
