Just put strings on a fretless banjo I finished today. Its a one of a kind without plans or assistance, other than a careful reading of Foxfire. The ring is three layers of octogonal cedar with a mahogany neck and hand carved cherry pegs. It has a road kill racoon hide, a ring cut from an old aluminum pot, and seven tension screws. Four coats of hand rubbed varnish and a Navy blue bias tape over the skin edges, and adorned with brass tacks make it look pretty classy. Total investment was a lot of time, and less than ten dollars for tee nuts and strings. The tailpiece is of course, a fine old SS fork. When I get the e-tech figured out, I'll post a photo of the instrument. I'm that proud of it.
I am Amazed at the good sound it makes, but have no skills on a banjo, and am a bit troubled with the very muted sound when plucking a string shortened only with the pad of a finger. Is there something I should know, like, do something different than try and play it with the pads of my fingers as I do on the fiddle?
