I always wanted to play the banjo as a child, my parents told me that there weren't any music teachers near us then so I ended up failing at the clarinet for a good few years.
I finally got a banjo this year as a birthday gift. I have started without using finger picks to keep the noise down. I have the Teach yourself banjo book by Janet Davis which I am enjoying working my way through. I have now ordered some picks after my son stated that he thinks I am failing because i don't have any picks - I wasn't of the opinion that I was failing but who can argue with a 12 year old! At least it wasn't his usual classification of an epic failure!!
I am finding it hard to find the space to practice, not sure the family are enjoying the repetitive tunes quite as much as I am, but I genuinely get excited at the prospect of picking up the banjo each day.
Oh and the picture is from a festival last year - Jamie's Feastival when I met a guy running a book stall who had a sign offering free banjo lessons. I got to sit down with him for half an hour or so and it reminded me that this was the one instrument that I really wanted to play and probably planted the seed which started this journey. i loved the way that he just wanted to share his passion for the banjo.
Really pleased to have found Banjo Hangout, what a great resource and love reading up on all the experience. Its a bit tricky to search members in the UK as you cant search by city or county, but I'd like to get to meet some players local to Buckinghamshire if there are any when I eventually get good enough to think about jamming.
