Can anyone advise me on type of banjo to purchase for an adult beginner?

My son (mid 30's, married, with son) has expressed interest in learning to play the banjo as a hobby and just for his own enjoyment.   Can anyone offer advise?    I know absolutely nothing about the instrument and I want to be sure to get him started with the proper type and yet stay within a budget.

I enjoy music -- I have a married son (father of a 1 year old son) who has expressed interest in learning to play the banjo. I want to get him one for Christmas; along with instructions for a beginner. I am looking for someone to advise me on the type of banjo that I should purchase for him.
