What is 'Chicago Tuning'?

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

I have been playing every kind of banjo appropriate for every style of American music that employs a banjo for about 55 years, and, (for teaching purposes,) pride myself on keeping up with the latest trends, but  until recently reading it in your column, have never come across the term 'Chicago Tuning'!  What is it and what is its purpose? Chordially, Stan Gee. (in U.K.)

15 years old started playing rhythm banjo in Skiffle & Dixieland Jazz bands, Pete Seeger's Little red book led they journey through all 5-string folk styles and introduction to kindred instruments. Started performing professionally late teens as a solo singer, followed by Old -Time & Bluegrass bands, up to my current passion for Western Swing. Have taught music for approx 35 years, specialising in explaning the theory that most tutors try to ignore! My goal is to encourage people to perfom, rather than hide in a session for, if the want maximum satisfaction! Chordially Stan Gee
