I recently obtained a 1965 Vega 4-string Ranger tenor banjo. I'm cleaning it up a bit and noticed a few things I need some guidance on. They are:
1.) It is somewhat bright and loud sounding. I prefer a more traditional plunky, softer sound. The head is a Five Star, smooth both sides and I heard a fiberskyn might help tone it down a bit. I really don't want to try to install a skin head.
2.) It has a three leg Grover bridge and was wondering if a two leg might help me get closer to the sound I'm looking for.
3.) The strings are the standard steel-nickel and I wonder if bronze would help.
4.) Finally, the tailpiece has 5 slots in it, not four. Perhaps that tailpiece is what was originally used on the Folk Ranger models. Mine is a 4-string tenor. I'm not sure if the slight offset alignment angle of the strings between the bridge and tailpiece may have an effect on the sound or not. The 2nd and 3rd strings are not exactly aligned with the bridge slots like the 1st and 4th strings are with this tailpiece.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
