I saw the comment today on a student who doesn't practice and the request for comment.
I'm several years older than your student and in a place where there just IS no teacher for the banjo - I may be the only person playing banjo in the whole country! So I have to practice on my own - find a quiet place and get on with it. But I must say, I'm having fun and making some progress, if not yet quite ready for Prime Time!
I struggle and would love to have someone to guide me. That's why Banjo Hangout and some similar web places are so valuable. But nothing, even with a guide, is going to replace "just do it"!
So my suggestion is tough love.
I suggest that your student is enamored of playing the banjo but not enough to accept that its only practice that is going to accomplish what he says he wants. There's whole lot of fun just learning a lick in the quiet of your back room!
So the answer is to shock him some - decline his teaching sessions where so much time is wasted because of his tepid commitment, until he makes that necessary commitment to the practice.
I guess the question is - does he really want to learn?
