I have always had a love for the beautiful sounds of the banjo. I suppose this love blossomed from the love my mother and father have for Bluegrass. It is so important to share the beauty and magic with the generations to come. Every year as a child we made the trip up Grass Valley, Ca for the Father's Day Bluegrass festival starting with the year I was in my mother's womb. I have always had the desire to learn banjo however the concept has always been intimidating. Can I really create that beautiful noise I hear up on the stage? There is such a passion that pours from musicians. In the past I could only capture it in my artwork and not really experience except through watching and listening. On 5/2/12 I purchased my first Banjo! I am so proud of my student grade banjo, the Deering Goodtime 2 5 string banjo with resonator. I played at least 6 hours today, finding I pick up the different aspects of the banjo somewhat easily. Perhaps it is the 8 years of piano lessons and the years of flute. I won a scholarship for flute in school. It is coming much easier than the Guitar did...which is sitting in the corner collecting dust. The interesting thing is I cannot even read music (one of my goals). I hear things by ear and figure them out...that is what I have always done. That is how I am learning the banjo now. I am looking forward to learning so much more! I have worked in the Fashion Industry for 12+ years and I am an artist. I recently left my full time high stress job to focus on my artwork full time and to have time to do things like learn how to play banjo. Life is too short to do anything other than live it to the fullest!
