I thought I would keep a log of my progress in hopes that folks might provide advice and encouragement as I move along.
My instrument arrived yesterday. It was pretty much set up but I had to tune it a bit. I surprised myself that my ear hadn't lost it's sense of tone. I plinked a bit and started working through the first few pages of the Earl Scruggs book that I ordered at the same time. I can tell already that it will be a long road for these 60-year old fingers to limber up enough to allow good chord technique.
My first lesson is next Wednesday. In the meantime, I'm going to try to get up to speed with some very basic stuff like learning chord positions, etc. - Wish me luck! I'm looking forward to this ride.

I'm a sixty year-old guy that has finally decided to fulfill a fantasy. I have always enjoyed listening to good bluegrass banjo but never thought I could learn to play it. Now that I'm older, I've come the conclusion that it doesn't matter if I'm great at it, what matters is that I have fun doing it. So, with that in mind, I'm setting off on a path to take me there. I'm the kind of guy who will try to get as much advice as possible before I jump so that I won't be disappointed in my choice of instrument and my expectations will be realistic.
