Picking since I was 13 (can't hardly remember not playing). My greatest musical influences were Dillard Wiley and his son Bobby. Dill knew the value of timing and he did everything he could to develop it in me, hours of picking with him on the guitar. His son Bobby was undoubtedly one of the finest banjo secrets the Louisville scene has produced. Had drive like no one I've ever seen, incredible. The other great one isn't a secret, Steve Cooley. One of my longest friendships. First instrument is banjo on which he is a master, as well as the long list of others that he plays. Hangin with Steve made me a better player, learned a lot from him. My uncle was a tremendous influence, couldn't play anything but had a love of the music second to none. He always challenged me to raise my playing to a higher level. I've never been a professional musician, too big a chicken always had a day job. Been in a number of local bands and filled in for others from time to time. Currently work for the Sullivan's and First Quality Music. Kinda field most of the banjo questions that come in over the phone and email. Had a number banjos over the years. Guess the greatest one I had was 1932 TB3 conversion. Always wanted a flat head so I ended up trading it away to a great friend of mine who still has the banjo. Bill Sullivan made a parts banjo for me around 1976 and I kept it until I got my Stelling in 1979. Played that one til my Dad made the one I play a couple of years ago. Also play an F model mandolin that he made me, I am very proud of these priceless instruments (and they sound great on top it all). I play GHS banjo strings, have for probably 25 yrs.
