The Beauty of String Tinkers' "Canjos"

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

String Tinkers is our small instrument building enterprise in Putnam, CT. In March of 2012 Anthony Foronda, George Brin and I decided to make Vintage Cigar- and Tin-Box fretted instruments. We quickly realized that nearly all the parts we used were recycled or repurposed--body, neck, tuners, bridge/nut. Our little enterprise grew quickly. We now make 6-String Guitars, 4-String Ukuleles, and--the point of my blog--4-String Canjos. The Canjos are my favorite. I handed one to Ricky Skaggs a week ago, backstage at a local festival. He was impressed!!!

The Canjo is our homage to those beautiful Old-Time, Long-Neck 5-String Banjos of the Early/Mid 20th Century--The Whyte Laydies and Vega Pete Seeger models. We use a Piezo Undersaddle Transducer pick up to help with the sound. We string our Canjos with 4 strings, tuned like the 4 long strings of a traditional Banjo: D-G-B-D. The Sound!! Marvelous!! A cross between  Dulcimer and Sitar with Banjo Sauce on top.

I hope to have Anthony upload pictures of our Canjos so you Banjo Enthusiasts can get a better idea of what we do.

Our Canjos cost approximately $279--$319 each.
