I am an Aerospace Engineer with a passion to play Bluegrass. I began my interest in playing the banjo in 1985, but I was continuing my college education at the same time, and my university studies got priority over banjo lessons. I promised myself that after I completed my advanced education I would try to pick up where I left off. Unfortunately, plans don’t always turn out the way we would like them to be, and other hobbies took precedence. I am a veteran Reenactor of the American Civil War (especially U.S. Cavalry and U.S. Marines), and of WWII (President of the 101st Airborne Reenactment Association). It was during one of many Civil War reenactments that I met several banjo players, and it seemed like a good time to pick up my instrument and try my hand once more at taking lessons. I found an excellent instructor who is my age (Ed Lick, Perkasie, PA) who has been playing for over thirty years, and I'm extremely pleased with my progress and his helpful instruction. Although I have learned more than four-dozen songs (and many left-hand techniques), I still consider myself a novice, and my repertoire continues to grow. I began playing with an old ‘Mardan’ aluminum-pot banjo that my grandmother gave me over twenty years ago, but since have upgraded to a wonderful sounding Gold Tone OB-250+.
