book: fiddle tunes for clawhammer banjo

Saturday, January 14, 2012

Years - or rather decades - ago I had a book titled "John Burke´s Fiddle Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo"; I think at least this was the title. There were lots of tunes in it from the playing of Wade Ward of Kentucky, for example. Somewhere along the way the book got lost, and I´ve been trying to get a copy ever since - looking up Mel Bay Publications, Homespun Tapes, among others. Is there anybody who knows about this book, knows where to get it perhaps, or knows whether it is out of print? Help definitely appreciated!

Heard the Ramblers in 1966, got hooked; had guitar lessons with Tom Paley of the original New Lost City Ramblers in London; travelled extensively in Appalachia in early 70s, met lots of musicians and stayed a week with Jimmy Driftwood ("Battle of New Orleans", "Tennessee Stud") in the Ozark Mountains, learning a lot about the music first hand; played harp for 10 years in a bluesband in the 90s; total immersion in clawhammer, and also playing fiddle tunes on the harp. Spending as much time now as possible in Boston - with its amazing New Acoustic Scene - and in Victoria BC, on Vancouver Island; and had a marvellous fall 2015, playing sessions in Oregon and Washington, learning a huge amount of new tunes - or new ways of playing old ones.
