30 something banjo beginner. I also play guitar and bass in a dodgy pub rock covers band.
I love this quote stolen from Nick Barraclough's review of the Steve Martin album 'The Crow', I can relate to it as most people who hear I'm trying to learn the banjo think I'm a little odd:
"The instrument is counter-intuitive, fragile and unreliable; its parts move around all the time and it is never in tune. If you invented it now you’d be thought mad, so to learn to play it at all you have to be a little odd"
