So it has been about 3 months since I've gotten my banjo and been learning to play. I've taken some online lessons with John Boulding which were great, and I've been working through materials in the Janet Davis "You Can Teach Yourself Banjo" book. For Christmas, I received a copy of "Earl Scruggs and the 5-String Banjo". I've since started working through the exercises in the Scruggs book and finding it extremely helpful. Although, the books and lessons were great the most enjoyable learning tool I've found is Pete Wernick's "Bluegrass Jamming" DVD.
I structure my practice time so that I spend about 40 minutes working on various peices and then spend about 20 or more minutes playing along with the "Bluegrass Jamming" DVD. So far, I feel like I can comfortably play backup and a break along with Salt Creek and Worried Man Blues. I just started working on Hot Corn, Cold Corn.
Other songs I'm working on that aren't on the "Bluegrass Jamming" DVD include; Cripple Creek, Blackberry Blossom, and Cumberland Gap.
I've also made so upgrades to my Goodtime. I picked up a resonator and flange to convert it into a Goodtime 2. It has some non-matching gold tuners on it and a fellow BHO member was nice enough to hook me up with some tuners of of one of the newer Goodtime banjos, so now everything matches again. I also picked up a hardshell case for it from another BHO member.
