Lesson 13

Sunday, January 16, 2011

We made some tweaks to Fireball Mail, Glenn seemed pleased with my effort. Cripple Creek 2nd Break went well also. I'm now working on backup playing on Fireball Mail. I only have to deal with the G and D chords this week, with G covering the third to fifth frets and D covering the seventh fret. Practicing a two beat method; the fourth sting followed by the first and second strings. Playing at 100 bpm using my metronome. I need to record Glenn playing Fireball Mail at 100 bpm, playing to the metronome is putting me asleep.

I was heading out on vacation (September 2010) and decided I should give the banjo a try; there is not a lot to do on a small island in Maine. After 3 weeks I decided I was awful and enlisted the help of Glenn Nelson of Mockingbird Music in Berlin, Mass. This was one of my better decisions to go with a teacher instead of purely learning from books/CDs/DVDs. I started a "better banjo" fund and thought if I stuck with it for 2 years, I'd get a good one because by then I would probably know why I needed to upgrade. I was very happy with my Fender FB300 but during November 2010 a Deering Calico crossed my path at a don't pass up price; now I own two banjos. My previously musically experience was the clarinet while in the 4th grade. After my first recital the music teacher told my mother I should seek other interests. Took me 45 years to realize that teacher may have been wrong.
