Early Gibson RB 800

Monday, November 21, 2011

Recently a friend brought an old Gibson RB 800 to me to clean up and install a head as the old one was busted. I will post some pics in a couple of days. It has the old big gear box keys. wide frets and a strange looking tailpiece like I have never seen before. Most of the gold is gone but he tone ring is still in pretty good shape. The tone ring has visible milling marks on the top and has the standard Gibson hole pattern. The tone ring, arm rest and hoop are engraved and it has the flying eagle inlay. The neck is quite thick. The banjo has been played a lot and had a letter from Earl Scruggs in the case thanking the previous owner for a record he had sent him and for purchasing some items from his music store in Madison Tennessee.

The SN is stamped in the back of the head stock and is 307434. Made in USA is not stamped in the head stock. It has no label on the rim but has AA 100 stamped in the Rim. On the heel of the neck it has RB written in pencil .It is in fair shape and sound for playing put most metal parts show heavy tarnish and the typical old metal look of Gibson banjos when the plating has came off.

Does anyone have an idea about what year it was made?
