Banjo problem

Sunday, June 6, 2010

I have a mountain banjo I just got a week ago (brand new). The number 1 string (D) seems to be dead in the sense that it plays the same note no matter where on the string I place my finger. The problem is also intermittent. Sometimes it works fine, and sometimes the string is "dead." Pushing down on that string or running through a practice routine sometimes clears up the problem. After looking at the instrument closely, I'm thinking perhaps the wooden nut is not sturdy enough and that a bone nut or something more substantial than what I've got, might clear up the problem... any opinions out there?  Thanks, Emory
