as a kid, I learned piano, oboe, and guitar. I dropped the oboe after college, but have been playing guitar and piano for a lot of years. I gigged from mid-'70s to mid-'80s, basically, started out with heavy classic and progressive rock, then punk and new wave. I moved to Chicago for Grad School in '85 and did some alt-rock and industrial, but I was done with bands and just doing pickup blues and fillins for friends. I came to really fall in love with R&B and the Blues. In '99 I came back to the Austin, Texas area where my roots are and slowly got into Old-Time, Celtic, and Bluegrass. Around this time I saw Down From the Mountain and it had a deep and lasting effect on me. So a few years ago, I got a bonus and finally picked up a few strings new to me. I am learning banjo and mandolin, and starting to get decent. Definitely still a beginner, but I can play a few things. :-) I picked up a fiddle as well, but haven't gotten very far with it yet, I plan on finding a teacher soon to help get some traction. There are number of Texas fiddlers a few generations back, I mean to get there eventually. And no matter where you go, there you are.
