What a way to get started

Monday, September 3, 2007

I was a railroad switchman/conductor for about 35years. I was working a regular yard  job in Roseville Ca. one morning when my engineer(known as a Hoghead) asked me if I wanted some firewood.  He was cutting down a huge pecan tree in is yard.  Being somewhat of a  smartaleck I told  him "sure  give an 8 foot  log and  I'll build a  banjo  out  of it.    5:30  the next morning  I hear a thump out on  my front lawn and walk outside to find an 8 foot log laying  right  in the middle of the lawn.   I cussed a few time and figured I would get even at work. Shoved the log around the side  of the house and left it.  I got to work and found out that my engineer had gotten off of the job.
I didn't see  him for a year and then one morning in  he walks.  First thing  he asked was how the banjo was coming.  I went home and started on number 1 from that log.  I am  working on number six now in addition to 2 guitars.  What a wonderful hobby and I am even learning to play a little. I'm an old man trying to learn to build. Can't hear very well so playing is tough but I do love the instrument.
