I've been working on this clawhammer style of banjo playing for about three weeks now. It took me about a week to get the 'bum-ditty' strum down and now it's starting to feel quite a bit more natural. I've been sticking to learning songs that are fairly easy and very familiar to me (i.e. Oh Susannah, Cripple Creek, Bile them Cabbage and etc.) and so far so good.
I remember how I struggled to learn to play guitar many years ago as a teen-ager. The road ahead of me looked long and difficult but I perservered and now I can play the heck out of the guitar. As I sit here in my dining room learning clawhammer licks on my banjo I feel like that teen-ager I used to be, I'm excited about learning to play this new instrument but I'm also looking down the road at the hard work it's going to take to get to where I want to be with it musically. But I'll get there, and I'll have fun along the way.
