OK I may get pounced on for this question, but here it goes:

I picked up my first five string banjo in summer of 07 so I'm still quite new.  One thing I'm having a hard time with is figuring out which tunings go with which keys well.  All the information I find regarding tuning is based on actual existing songs that seem to be in every Old Time players repitroire.  Some of the tunings are named after the songs themselves.  Now I love the sound of Old Time music, but Im not all that familiar with it yet.  I can recognize certain numbers and not know what they are called.  I knw I should familiarize myself with them, but what I really want to know is, Is there a good source of info out there that will explain to me the different tunings of a five string banjo not based on existing Old Time music or BlueGrass music but more so I can understand how to jam on the banjo with any other instrument?

Also, based on what I read here on this site and others, it seems as though all anyone plays are Old Time tunes.  Is it uncommon to just jam or to write new tunes clawhammer style?  Now I mean no disrespect by this question, like I said I like the Old Time tunes and I want to learn them as well, but I am having a hard time finding any info regarding the clawhammer banjo that is not based on a tune rather than the style as a whole.

For example: Ritchie Stearns of the Horse Flies (among other bands) He has a great style of playing and can just play with anything.
