I began building banjos in 2005, in the woodshop that my grandfather built in the 1940's. My grandfather used the shop until the 1970's. My father, a talented furniture maker, used the shop until the early 1980's. The shop lay dormant until I began repairing the and reconditioning the structure and the tools. Since then I have added my own tools to my father's and grandfather's. I began building banjos in the afternoons and weekends, and as time moves on I find myself squeezing in more and more hours in the shop. For me, the process is a journey. I am learning the definition of craftsmanship, and how to think simply and efficiently. And I'm getting to know my grandfather. To use his tools, to feel the bite of the wood in my hand the same as he felt in his. And to know the meaning of "God is in the details."
