In 2006 I entered the local music shop with my daughter's mandolin. On my way to the shop I listened to the Dubliners and Barney McKenna in particular. "If Becko, so I thought to myself, still has that tenor in his shop, I must try and play this tune." But of course, the banjo had been sold the day before. A friend of ours was waiting in Becko's place and was playing just for fun on a guitar. I told him about the miserable state I was in. "No reason to despair," he told me, "I've got a five-string in the attic. You can have it because I don't play the banjo. It's a gift my wife gave me. " That's how I got my five string. The tenor I bought. Oh, I even have a six-string which was a gift, too. When the Iron Curtain crumbled to pieces, a journalist was offered it by a banjoist from the ex-GDR. As he had no idea what to do with a banjo, he just gave it to me. Such is life.
