I first picked up the banjo a few years back and tried to focus on 3-finger picking. I tried clawhammer at the time but just couldn't get it. I could play bluegrass relatively well from tabs but never got too far and found I wasn't having a lot of fun. I shifted to mandolin for a few years and again got to be decent on it but lost interest. Then, I picked up a ukulele of all things and learned to just have fun playing and not become too obsessed with speed or virtuosity. I stumbled on some clawhammer uke instructional material, practiced for weeks, and began to get the nag of it. This eventually lead to a return to the banjo and a focus on clawhammer playing. And, right now, I couldn't be happier.
