I'm mainly a fiddle player (which I also teach). Been playing that since 1980. Pretty much strictly OT music, but I also like Cajun & Irish. I learned how to play CH banjo from Ken Perlman's book---got all the way through it. After that I felt like I was being too dependent on written tab, so I started to play (& learn tunes) by ear, which really liberated me to try some things I wouldn't have otherwise. I don't play in more than a couple tunings, but there were some OT fiddlers who only played in AEAE tuning (key of A for the uninitiated), so I don't feel too bad.
