Fifty years and still a novice

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

A recent story of pawn shops being someones cryptonite struck me between the eyes as it explains my banjo start at THE CLIFFORD ESSEX SHOP in London when I visited there 52 years ago and became very close friends with the famous Mac MacNaughten who was then editor of BMG music mag. I presented to him a banjo i had bought 2 hours earlier for 5 pounds sterling and only wanted his opinion as to his assessment of this item. He held it by the neck and smashed it to pieces on his counter, took out his wallet, paid me 5 pounds, and threw me out!  BUT, I went back, and back until we became frriends and I now have 2 of his banjos. I gave up the banjo after 6 months and since then have been back to the pawn shops, buying/trading 5 more banjos, trying to play them for a few months then leaving them again. For the last 15 years I pick up a machine two or 3 times a year for 1-2 months then forget it, and all my tunes, once again. While I was just to busy for many years, now I'm retired but now old and stupid, tone deaf and 70% deaf anyway, and haven't a musical note in my body, but still I try to learn this instrument of the devil since I adore the sound, but will never rise above a beginner, but that's ok since I only play for my dog and never in front of humans who might laugh at me.                                                                             Like the chap who feels pawn shops his cryptonite. the only problem is the cryptonite has to be a whole lot stonger.          D Douglas
