When I was in 6th grade (2000) I decided I wanted to play some sort of instrument, and I eventually settled on the bass guitar. I played on a cheap Squire that I had until I upgraded 4 yrs later to a 5 string Ernie Ball Stingray 5. I love that bass! I really got into slap bass since one of my favorite bands I listened to was Primus, and that was a majority of what I played and learned. (learned so many other songs beside Primus that there's no way I can keep track of them all). I started to feel like I should try and learn every instrument I've ever been interested in since I'd been playing only bass guitar for 6 years straight. I didn't want to be restricted to only one aspect in the music I like. So my next interest was acoustic Guitar. I got a black Takamine G Series acoustic guitar, which I fell in love with. After I got that I almost didn't pick up my bass for a year because I was so concentrated on learning the new instrument. So I've been playing that for about a year and a half now and I'm always learning new things. I first memorized all the chords I thought I'd use the most then I began learning songs. I learned a lot of Johnny Cash songs since I've always listen to him, and I learned a lot of Tenacious D cause they've been one of my favorites for a really long time. I also learned music from the Tobasco Donkeys after I went to Philmont twice. If you've never heard of them, they have a pretty interesting story that you can read about on wikipedia, and their music is great too! I tried making a few of my own songs too and learning other guitar basics, but I've pretty much taught myself everything without watching any instructional videos on how to play guitar (even though it probably would have helped and I should have), but my playing turned out just fine without it. But beside guitar, I've always been interested in bluegrass music and specifically the banjo. I wanted one really bad, but it always seemed to expensive, and I also felt it might interrupt me learning guitar. But I felt like I might be running out of time to learn all the instruments that I wanted since I would probably get a lot busier in the next few years, with transferring to a new college and focusing on my career and what not. But on an instinctive move, I finally decided that I would buy one this year (2008). At first I bought this really crappy 20-year-old banjo for $40 from some guy on craigslist just to play around on it to see if I really wanted to take an interest in this. After about a month or two I sold that crappy thing, since I felt that it's playability was holding me back (which it was) and because I found the perfect beginner banjo and I felt like I was ready. So today (April 21, 2008) I received my Epiphone MB200. Yeah, it might not be much to a professional (or from what I hear, it is), but its exactly what I wanted. And from what I've played on it so far, I think it will take me to where I want to be. I hope to stick with all three of these Instruments and to absolutely prefect my skills in each one someday. I don't think I'll be buying anymore instruments anytime soon though. One: I think learning more than 3 instruments would be too much, and two: I ran out of space in my room!
