My Dad started me on the musical road in 1954 when he would put me, his newborn first son, down in front of the record player while playing Miles Davis or Duke Ellington. I built my first musical instrument in the fourth grade, when I tuned eight coke bottles by ear to a major C scale, and began to pick out tunes for the class. By the end of the day the teacher had me demonstrate this to all the other fourth grade classes. Thus began both my preforming career and playing by ear. I played the clarinet in the band and orchestra from elementary school into high school. As many kids did, in the 60's and 70's ,I picked up a little of the acoustical and electric guitar. Pretty much did not play any music in undergrad school. After graduation from NCSU in 1977, I spent a summer designing and hand building a dulcimer, and then bumming around the USA and Canada. I picked up a bunch of old time tunes at that time. I entered Grad school at MIT in 1979, and playing the dulcimer or any kind of music pretty much faded away with the onset of career, marriage and children. I then picked up the Fiddle about 2001 when my daughter started suzuki lessons. My friend Mike Southern invited me to an OldTime session at his house, and the rest is history. My wife bought me a Mandolin for some darn reason, and I picked that up. I played my friend Charley Nelson's tenor banjo during one of our recent sessions, and was captivated by the sound. Tuned GDAE. So I found and old 1923 Gibson TB-3 for myself, and I am now having a blast. Our Weekly jam has morphed into the Southern String Band. See our web site at: http://www.southernstringband.net I am also in the process of restoring a 1951 John Deere Model B tractor.
