How to build up speed

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

I have been picking for approximately 6 months with my instructor.  I have 4 songs under my belt.  I am currently working on FMB.  I have the first part down and am working on the neck.  My instructor was very reluctant to start me down the neck.  I find this very difficult.   My question is how do I build speed on the banjo?  I know practice, practice, practice.  Sometimes on my day off, I find myself practicing up to 5 hours a day.  One day i will have it down perfect.  The next day it seems like I am starting all over again.  My fingers are everywhere on my right hand.  Would anyone agree with just learning the first part of a song like FMB, Fireball Mail without going down the neck.  My thinking is I need to learn the entire song, not just parts.  Don't get me wrong, my instructor has 30 plus years of banjo instruction and is an excellent musician on guitar, mandolin, and fiddle.  He tells me, "One day it will just click."  Starting my practice session at home, I will go over my rolls for about 30 to 40 minutes.  Then I will start with my instruction.  I only use a tape recorder and tab some hard parts.  It seems like the rolls are different when I start picking down the neck.  That's why I find the second part of FMB difficult.  I know 90% of picking is in my right hand.  The left will come.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.    2 comments

Thanks for all the prayers

I started taking Banjo lessons a few years ago, but life, kids and work got in the way. I've recently picked it up again and it's like starting all over. As a child, I can remember going with Dad to the Fiddler's Conventions on Beattie's Hill. The banjo was the one instrument we both thoroughly enjoyed. Dad tried to take lessons, but couldn't get the left to keep up with the right. He said he was too old. Now at 40 years old, I hope I'm not too old. I lost my Dad nine years ago, so I do this in remembrence of him.
