Back in the Holy Land

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Hey all you banjo tramps! I'm back in the Land of Israel, at least until next week. Then I have to return to NC for a while. I opted to bring my dog rather than my banjo, which is kind of sad because I want both my dog AND my banjo here...in this case, I didn't get to have everything. On the other hand, it's Sukkot right now and there is nothing better than being in Israel during Sukkot (the Festival of Booths), when everyone moves out of their houses and camps out in temporary dwellings with roofs made of palm leaves for a week. Yes, we did get rather wet when it rained the other day, and we blew the main breaker in the house when a lamp that was connected to the house with an extension cord shorted out. I wasn't home at the time. My roommate had to go out on the main street and find a non-Jew to flip the breaker back on, since it was Shabbat and we are not allowed to turn electrical things on and off during Shabbat. I wish I had been there to watch him try to use his pidgeon Hebrew on the African guy who sweetly volunteered to help him, since the guy was from Sudan and spoke whatever language they speak in the Sudan anyway, and certainly not Hebrew. But. The got the job done and by the time I got home we had lights. To those of you who are Jewish, Moadim l'Simcha, and to those of you who aren't, hope you are having a great time! Love and peace, Laura Add Comment

See my web page for the whole dern thing. Otherwise, I've been hammering away on the banjo since I was 19 I think. Spent as much time as I could with the old folks in Virginia, North Carolina and so on till they left the world. I've been pretty much a hermit up till now but decided maybe it's time to come out from under my rock and have some fun. I live in Jerusalem, Israel, where I study Jewish music and mysticism. I come back to the States several times a year to visit my family. I hope to bring some banjos and do some pickin' while I'm there! Check out my CD on CD Baby. You can listen to the whole thing there and clips are on my website.
