North Fork Bluegrass Update

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Back from Hotchkiss and what an awesome weekend. It was great to see Banjo Hangout members from all over in attendance to the Festival, in rural Colorado! I think the best thing was the intimate setting that a smaller festival gives off. Attending the banjo workshops by Jens Krueger (The Krueger Brothers), David Cavage (The Hickory Project) and Josh Miller (Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain) were relaxed, not pretentious, and just a great time to get to know the artists, pickup some helpful tips, and connect with some of the local players. My daughter attended a songwriter workshop on Saturday with Diana Jones and was asked by Diana on Sunday to help write and perform a song during her set! I think those are experiences you just dont get at larger festival concerts. I have managed now to completely drive my wife nuts (she thinks that the bagpipes may be slightly more annoying in the novice stage) but watching the pros and getting to know them just puts a drive into my determination to step up my progression to a new level - hopefully it carries through! My excitement has carried through to my kids who both also attended fiddle workshops, so now it is just a household of chaotic noise! Good thing we live in the country! Yee Haw! Just a couple of shameless plugs: Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain will be releasing a new CD in July - Listen to them now on Sirius Bluegrass and they will be doing a live interview to cover the new material in July. You have to love any band that has a corporate sponsor by Moonpies! Support David and The Hickory Project through their work at (I've written post about this website) Truly a great tool and they are a great bunch of people. The Krueger Brothers will be touring the United States with a Symphony Orchestra as their backup - not your normal Earl Scruggs bluegrass but definitely masters of their instruments and a real joy to listen to! 2 comments

After a brief hiatous I have found a way to make my life more manageable, and I have aquired a thirst and craving to practice and play daily. This in itself now drives my wife and family crazy becasue if I'm not listening to instrumental banjo and moving my fingers with it, I'm reading articles or watching instructional videos, or just plain ole picken and practicin'. Hopefully the drive remains because I sure do enjoy the heck out of it!
