From Collector to Player

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

I have had this old banjo kicking around int my closet for years.  It has always been collecting dust around my family's house when I was growing up.  I just thought I'd carry it along with me.  I figured, because it was so old, It might not be playable.  I brought it out to show guests my nice antique.  I thought, sometimes at night, just how much it could be worth to a collector.

Now one day, not too long ago, I brought it out to use my super Internet skills to find out what this darn thing was.  after many post to BHO, visits to Mugwumps and other sites, I found out that the banjo ain't too special.  Sure, its pre-war and and has stayed in tune since the day I strung it up, but no one wanted to collect my little Slingerland Banjo.

One day, one of the folks at BHO say the tail piece and figured it was a Grover Presto - Prewar.  It was.  I sent away for the cover for this little tail piece in hopes that I can sell it or trade it fro a proper banjo...

This is where things got sticky.  I played it once... then again.  then every day for about two hours a day.  I was loving the instrument and found that I really could pick it up easily. Just today, I had My first jam as a banjo player and I wasn't horrible!  Of course I realize that I have only been playing for about 20 hours, but It was the two or three hour jam that taught me the most!

Now I don't want to have the strings off of it for more than a couple of days.  I don't know if it is worth selling the tailpiece!

James Has been playing many instruments for about 22 years. It all started with piano at age 12 and with the help of my brother in a rock band, he needed to play more and be as "cool" as them. After high school, James played piano and sang for years while also learning Guitar, bass, drums, accordion and handfulls of percussion instruments. James is also quite into recording and has recorded many small EPs and albums. Banjo has been a recent passion of James as he started here at the Banjo Hangout. He has found a real love for this instrument and hopes to one day get really go and form a bluegrass band.
