Bridge/String Setup for Reiter Regent

Recently I purchased a 1995 Bart Reiter Regent banjo.  And yes, I admit to being a lucky man to gain such a fine instrument, particularly so since as an absolute "beginner" I am not talentwise worthy of such a gem!  I believe it is setup as it was originally produced: Fiberskyn head, Waverly tailpiece, and metal strings.  At the recommendation of several BanjoHangout members, I purchased Dan Levenson's "Clawhammer from Scratch" DVD and have been diligently following ClawDan's tutorial sequence.

I have discovered the natural/ergonomic playing position for my right hand is at the base of the fretboard--not over the head.  My fretboard, however, is not "scooped", and it seems my index finger tends to "bang" the fretboard as I stroke any string.  From reading past Forum discussions I have gleaned that to remedy this problem I should try changing to a 3/4" bridge.  I am poised, ready to order a Snuffy Smith 3/4" bridge from Elderly this afternoon, but I wondered if anyone has an opinion as to whether I should go with "standard" spacing or "Crowe" spacing?   Also, I don't think my banjo had been played for several years before I bought it, so the present strings have been on there quite a while.  Although the whyte laydie tonering does make this sucker "ring like silver" , the strings--especially the 4th--seem to buzz.  Good time to install a new set?  Any recommendations on brand and type?  Any special manner preferred for changing out the bridge and strings at the same time?  Thanks in advance for replies.
