I live in Germany near Munich. I first heard clawhammer banjo played when I was about 13 years old - on a Doc Watson record, this was about 40 years ago. I was totally intrigued by the sound, but had no idea how this instrument was played to get that sound - there was no youtube back in those days. So I concentrated on the guitar and mostly forgot about the banjo. About ten years ago, by incident I stumbled over Miles Krassen's clawhammer tutor. With the help of the internet I gradually found out about clawhammer playing. I ordered Dan Levenson's excellent tutor "Clawhammer banjo from scratch". Donald Zepp's "clearhead videos" also helped a lot. Later I worked through Ken Perlman's books and from there on I slowly started to do my own arrangemets for clawhammer banjo. Some years ago I met a group of people who play Irish Trad. So I started to play Irish tenor banjo (g,d,a,e) with a pick. This is a lot of fun, too.
