I never played any musical instrument before and knew nothing about music theory until Jan 2007. However, I've always loved bluegrass music and thought learning to play an instrument would be my next ultimate challenge. I began kidding to friends about learning to play the banjo (some day) but my wife called my bluff and bought me one for Christmas (2006). I've been studying music theory (the engineer in me makes me want to understand how everything works). Joined local Bluegrass club and have attended several festivals / concerts. Attended the Acoustic Music Camp in Dallas ('07) & Arlington (''08). Been taking lessons since Mar 2007, and started sitting in on local jam a couple of times a month. Bought a new banjo in Oct -- a Jim Penson Stringwerks custom, built around a RB-250 tone ring. I'm told it sounds good, even when I play it. (I think that is a complement to Jim's banjo makin' but not my pickin'.) 2-year update: Well it's been two years since I began pickin' and I think I have "Boil 'em Cabbage Down" and "Cripple Creek" figured out. Now on to "Wildwood Flower", "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", and "Down the Road". By gosh, this is going slow, but it's fun. I think I'll be able to keep up in the nursing home jams -- which I hope is many years away.
