Hey Guy, it's unusual to see you holding a banjo as it's usually been mandolin then guitar with the DCB. You won't remember Yorkshire Dales several years back when you were woken by a radio and used the 'f' word rather too loudly! We took pity and gave you the essential mug of sweet tea.
I thought the BBC did bluegrass and the banjo a serious disservice. The brief banjo bits they showed were not generally representative, all being played very very fast, as a result of which they were tuneless. In the short view of Earl Scruggs the sound was faded out and the 'talk over everything interesting' philosophy continued throughout. For popular interest, rather than show Don Reno, I would have preferred the Steve Mandell / Eric Weissberg 'Dueling Banjos' bit from that excellent banjo programme shown on the BBC a few years back. I acknowledge that Don was shown as an intro to his son's appearance, but I didn't think the "bluegrass in the night club full of drunks" session added anything to the programme. Also agree that the bit with Frank's mates was superfluous.
The scene at night around the festival in Kentucky hit my spot -people having fun making great music. If only they had shown a few scenes of good bands playing (and singing), a bit more history of the banjo in bluegrass (Earl Scruggs off the '3 Pickers'), much less of Munich, mates and melodrama (with Pete) then it might have made a better programme. As it was, I suggest most bluegrass 'fans' who watched it would be disappointed; Frank Skinner fans got .... Frank Skinner; and the 'genral public' - well, they seem to enjoy watching cr*p on television, don't they?!
