Since 1980 I've been studying and playing different styles of trad music ranging from old-time and blues to Tejano and Jewish klezmer on a variety of instruments. As an independent ethno-organologist, I research and write about music and music instrument traditions the world over throughout history. At present, my life is pretty much given over to researching and writing about the history of the banjo, its origins as an Afro-Creole/African American folk lute in the Caribbean during the 17th century, and its roots in the family of some 67 plucked spike lute traditions found throughout West Africa.
